Policy clarity steers Asian sustainability capital
Investors still demand credible transition plans and predictable regulation.
Asia-Pacific companies are integrating sustainability into business planning, but capital remains tied to clear policy signals and evidence that climate commitments can deliver commercial returns.
Joe Phelan, Executive Director for Asia-Pacific at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, said investors are looking beyond ambition towards credible transition plans.
“Ambition alone is not enough,” Phelan said. Financiers want to understand the investments being made, changes to business models and how companies will protect value in a carbon-constrained economy.
Prabodha Acharya, Chief Sustainability Officer at JSW Group, said predictability is especially important for hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, energy and manufacturing, where decarbonisation projects often have long payback periods.
Stable policies can reduce investment risk, lower the cost of capital and accelerate low-carbon deployment, he said. Transition plans must also balance growth, affordability and decarbonisation rather than treat sustainability as a separate corporate function.
Patrick Ho, Head of Sustainable Development at Swire Properties, said companies need reliable rules before making major capital commitments.
“That’s why capital moves where policy leads,” Ho said.
He added that credible plans should include science-based targets, board-level accountability, financial commitments and action across the full value chain.
The executives said sustainability is increasingly shaping corporate performance rather than serving only as a compliance exercise.
“This is really a competitiveness agenda. This is a value creation agenda. This is a corporate performance agenda,” Phelan said.
JSW Group has turned steelmaking waste into material for low-carbon cement, whilst Swire Properties sees certified green buildings supporting higher rents, asset values and tenant retention.
For investors, the key test is whether companies can turn sustainability ambition into credible and commercially viable transition plans.
