It was recognised for driving sustainable infrastructure and a smart city in the Philippines.
Real estate company Megaworld Corporation - Megaworld Lifestyle Malls brought home the Sustainable Infrastructure Award - Philippines and Smart City Award - Philippines accolades at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024.
The company set new benchmarks in sustainability with its “Park, Charge, Drive” across Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and its smart city, Eastwood City.
Transformative sustainable infrastructure
Megaworld Lifestyle Malls has launched the “Park, Charge, Drive” initiative, establishing a new benchmark for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Philippines, marking a significant advancement in sustainable infrastructure, commitment to reducing carbon emissions, promoting environmental stewardship and a greener future.
Since its introduction in 2022, these charging stations have been available across several of Megaworld’s properties, including Eastwood City, Uptown Bonifacio, Forbes Town, and Arcovia City. Plans are also in place to expand this initiative to other areas, further enhancing the accessibility of green transportation options throughout the region.
A standout feature of the “Park, Charge, Drive” initiative is its inclusivity, offering first-of-its-kind charging stations compatible with all types of electric vehicles. These stations are equipped with versatile connectors suitable for e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric cars. The CHRG Post 5-JP stations, fitted with SAE J1772 connectors, cater to e-bikes and e-scooters, whilst electric cars can utilise the wall-mounted BYD 7kW AC Chargers, which include GB/T and CCS2 adaptors.
Furthermore, the installation of Pulsar Plus 22kW chargers enhances the appeal of the charging stations by significantly reducing charging times. As some of the most powerful chargers available, these units offer convenience and efficiency, improving the overall charging experience.
Led by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls — in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development, as well as key private sector partners — the “Park, Charge, Drive” initiative has established state-of-the-art EV charging stations across various mall locations, becoming the first in the Philippines to accommodate all types of electric vehicles.
Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has serviced over 4,000 vehicles, consuming approximately 80,000 kilowatt hours and saving around 2,000 gallons of gasoline—equating to over PHP1m (US$17,924) in financial savings. Megaworld’s initiative exemplifies how innovative infrastructure can drive environmental and economic progress, setting a new standard for sustainability in the retail and urban development sectors.
Megaworld Lifestyle Malls’ dedication to promoting eco-friendly practices and greater adoption of green transportation earned them the Sustainable Infrastructure Award - Philippines category at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024.
Pioneering township combining sustainability with innovation
Launched by Megaworld in 1997, Eastwood City was the first development to introduce the live-work-play model in the country. It serves as a pioneering model of urban living in the Philippines, embodying the principles of a "smart city" through its innovative township design.
The live-work-play concept at Eastwood City was developed to tackle mobility, accessibility, and convenience, creating a self-sufficient environment where residents can seamlessly transition between home, work, and leisure.
Dubbed a “15-minute city,” it minimises the need for extensive travel, reducing reliance on automobiles, thereby lowering carbon emissions and fostering a healthier urban environment. Having everything within walking distance encourages walking and cycling supported by well-connected pathways and green spaces.
Eastwood City is a groundbreaking innovation in retail, enhancing the live-work-play environment. Citywalk integrates al fresco spaces with world-class retail brands and dining options, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Eastwood Mall serves as the township’s central anchor, featuring premium brands and attractions like SuperPark, and the first-ever Ultra Cinema, making it a hub for shopping and entertainment.
This integrated approach has influenced the real estate and retail sectors, establishing Eastwood City as a blueprint for developers and mall operators in the Philippines. Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and other major players have adapted this model to meet modern demands for convenience.
Historically, Eastwood City is significant as the Philippines' first IT park, established during the Asian financial crisis, marking the entry into the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. This move diversified the economy and positioned Eastwood City as a key player in the global BPO industry.
The integration of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces fosters a thriving ecosystem, reinforcing Eastwood City’s status as a forward-thinking urban model capable of adapting to changing times.
With its ongoing innovation and adaptability to a sustainable urban landscape, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls clinched the Smart City Award - Philippines accolade at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024.
