Belden plants lead the way in ESG strategy integration
The company’s projects aim to enable the company to achieve its ESG aspirations.
More than a century since its inception, manufacturing company Belden, a leading global supplier of network infrastructure and digitisation solutions, has cemented its reputation for doing business responsibly and ethically. In the past year, Belden formally integrated its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programme into its overarching strategy, unveiling its ambitious 2025 ESG goals.
As one of the company’s pivotal manufacturing facilities, Belden Suzhou developed and implemented a series of improvement projects to fulfil its commitment to the environment and achieve its ESG goals.
The objective of this Green Energy Transition Project is to utilise clean and sustainable electricity from solar energy and purchased wind energy, reduce energy costs and dependency on non-renewable energy sources, and reduce GHG emissions at the Belden Suzhou Plant.
Under this, Suzhou Plant used their roof to install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, which not only utilised unused space but also allowed 85% of the solar energy generated to be used for the plant's production. Surplus power generated by Belden Suzhou Plant PV can be provided to the power company, which contributes to local GHG emissions reduction.
“As a pioneer and leader in environmental protection, Suzhou Plant has always been making a positive impact in the local community. By taking the lead in achieving 100% green electricity use, we are influencing more enterprises in the local community to join us in reducing GHG emissions and protecting our environment, as well as our suppliers," the company said.
With the project, Belden has produced an average annual savings of 15% from electricity costs by using solar energy. It has also achieved 100% green electricity usage in its Suzhou plant due to the solar and purchased wind energy capabilities provided to the company.
Meanwhile, another one of Belden’s crucial factories is the Belden Pune, which also embarked on a transformative journey, meticulously crafting and implementing a suite of improvement initiatives to fulfil the company’s ESG aspirations.
This project centres on the reduction of wooden waste generation within the organisation by an audacious 10% within 12 months. This ambitious target was conceived to contribute significantly to a more sustainable future, thereby mitigating the environmental impact of its operational activities.
The inception of the project was marked by an exhaustive wooden waste audit, essential for establishing a baseline understanding of wooden waste generation within Belden, and the execution of a multifaceted strategy to curtail wooden waste. The strategy included recycling programmes, employee training, and monitoring and reporting of the progress of wooden waste generation.
Belden has yielded remarkable results, unequivocally underscoring its commitment to sustainability. It was able to slash wooden waste by 40%, whilst its recycling programme has also diverted a substantial 40% of wooden waste materials away from landfills.
With this, the company emerged triumphant at the ESGBusiness Awards as it took home the Renewable Energy Adoption Award - China category win for its project in Suzhou Plant, whilst the one in Pune was granted the Waste Reduction Award - India win.
“As we stride forward on this eco-conscious journey, we are resolute in our commitment to nurturing a greener, more responsible world," the company said. The prestigious awards programme honours businesses that demonstrate outstanding commitment and achievement in ESG practices, as well as those leading the way in building a sustainable future.
