Three in five garments end up in landfills annually
Lowest-priced garments are discarded after only seven wears.
For every five garments produced, three end up in a landfill or are incinerated annually, McKinsey reported.
In its report, The State of Fashion 2024, Business of Fashion and McKinsey found that fast fashion consumers are quick in throwing clothes away.
Estimates showed that the lowest-priced garments are discarded after only seven wears.
“For all the growth it generates, the fast fashion industry is also responsible for considerable waste,” the report read in part.
McKinsey reported that the total greenhouse gas emissions from textile production clocked in at 1.2 billion tonnes a year.
This is more than the emissions by all international flights and maritime ships combined, it noted.
