Climate change ranks high amongst challenges for Southeast Asians
More than half are concerned about the more frequent and intense weather events.
More than 53% of Southeast Asians are concerned about more frequent and intense weather events in the region, a report revealed.
This is a drop from the 57.1% recorded in the previous year, as revealed in the State of Southeast Asia 2024 Survey report of the ASEAN Studies Centre of the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.
Amongst Southeast Asians, Vietnam respondents emerged as the most concerned on the issue (75%), overtaking Philippine respondents.
“Vietnam experienced over 1,100 climate disasters last year with record-breaking temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius,” the report read in part.
Meanwhile, climate change ranked first in Singapore (64.8%), Indonesia (58.9%), and Thailand (55.7%).
Other top challenges confronting Southeast Asians are unemployment and economic recession (57.7%), and intensifying economic tensions (47%.
