Subang Jaya Medical Centre empowers community health with social impact initiatives

Its community health programme focuses on making accessible services, preventive measures, and health education.

Driven by an unwavering commitment to empowering the community’s right to health, private tertiary hospital Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) takes pride in its holistic approach to healthcare that extends beyond clinical experience. It has partnered with government agencies, non-government organisations, and media entities to launch a series of significant social impact initiatives in 2023.

The hospital is committed to a holistic approach to healthcare, extending beyond clinical excellence to create a healthier community. These programmes focus on empowering individuals through accessible healthcare services, preventive measures, and health education. Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal #3, SJMC is making a tangible difference in the well-being of the community.

Amongst the primary initiatives it has launched is the Global Surgery Initiative (GSI), which represents an unparalleled innovation in addressing healthcare disparities and transforming lives. In collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Anaesthesiologists and the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia, GSI aims to build sustainable, cutting-edge surgical interventions for underserved communities that go beyond conventional healthcare practices.

Through the initiative, SJMC has conducted two outreach programmes at district hospitals that have fewer than 100 beds and limited access to specialist-level care, wherein its highly skilled surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and nurses have teamed up with medical staff from other hospitals to perform more than 50 life-saving surgeries for underserved patients with conditions such as recurrent pancreatitis, end-stage renal failure, and those needing crucial hepaticojejunostomy.

Nurturing the future of healthcare

SJMC has also launched the “If Not Now, When? #endcervicalcancer” community campaign in alignment with the World Health Organisation’s Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy. Through strategic partnerships, the hospital has addressed early screening issues by offering free and accessible human papillomavirus (HPV) screening. This effort aligns with ESG values and prioritises the well-being of women in the community.

It has also distributed over 300 HPV PCR self-sampling swabs, worth RM120,000, to women over 30 from select local communities in Selangor, which has been conducted in collaboration with non-profit organisation ROSE Foundation and local community councils. The participants have tested themselves, with results being communicated via SMS within three weeks. Those who were tested positive were referred for follow-up care.

Meanwhile, like many neighbouring countries, Malaysia also faces a shortage of nurses, with the MOH estimating a gap of around 8,000 nurses since last year.

SJMC aims to address this issue by launching the “Nurse Quest: A Journey into Healthcare” initiative. With an investment of RM50,000 and the support of more than 20 healthcare professionals at the hospital, the initiative actively engages the future generation by providing selected secondary school students with hands-on nursing experience. This ensures a continuous influx of skilled professionals and fosters a culture of learning within the organisation.

Its dedication to social responsibility has caught the attention of the esteemed ESG Business Awards 2024, with the hospital clinching the Community Health Outreach Programme Award - Malaysia title.

“We are committed to driving positive change in the healthcare industry through accessible, quality healthcare with a strong focus on preventive care, creating a healthier, more sustainable future for all,” said Bryan Lin, SJMC Chief Executive Officer.

The coveted event celebrates companies that are leading the way in building a sustainable future. It also highlights businesses that demonstrate outstanding commitment and achievement in environmental, social, and governance practices.
