Samsung Malaysia Electronics wins accolades for waste management, carbon disclosure at ESGBusiness Awards 2024
The company’s innovative e-waste recycling programmes and carbon reduction initiatives highlight its commitment to environmental responsibility and eco-conscious business practices.
Samsung Malaysia Electronics has once again proven its commitment to sustainability, clinching two prestigious accolades at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024: the Waste Management Award - Malaysia and the Carbon Disclosure Award - Malaysia.
These awards reflect the company’s innovative efforts in waste management and its leadership in carbon reduction initiatives, affirming its position as a trailblazer in sustainable business practices.
Reduction of electronic waste by incentivising participation
Samsung’s Waste Management Award recognises its exceptional approach to reducing electronic waste (e-waste) and implementing eco-conscious initiatives. As part of a comprehensive waste management strategy, Samsung has established e-waste collection boxes at service centres across the country.
These strategically placed collection points make it convenient for customers to dispose of used electronics, such as mobile phones, tablets, and accessories, in an environmentally responsible manner. To incentivise participation, Samsung offers vouchers to customers who drop off their e-waste, effectively turning recycling into a rewarding experience. The initiative not only helps reduce waste but also fosters customer engagement and environmental awareness.
Samsung’s trade-in programme for home appliances further complements its waste management efforts. Customers who opt to trade in their old appliances for new ones receive a cash value for their old products, ensuring proper disposal at no additional cost to them.
By simplifying the recycling process for larger electronic items, such as refrigerators and washing machines, Samsung helps to prevent these items from ending up in landfills, significantly reducing environmental impact.
Samsung’s meticulous handling of e-waste, which averages 84,920 kg annually, ensures that all materials are directed to licenced vendors certified by government authorities, guaranteeing compliance with environmental standards.
Minimising waste with sustainable packaging
In addition to its waste collection and recycling programmes, Samsung has implemented sustainable packaging initiatives. As part of the "Galaxy for the Planet" platform, the packaging for Samsung’s latest smartphones and home appliances has been significantly reduced in weight and made from sustainably sourced materials.
For example, the Galaxy S22 and S23 Series come with eco-packaging made from 100% recycled paper and protective films derived from recycled plastic. This eco-conscious approach minimises waste generation and encourages consumers to reuse or repurpose packaging materials.
Samsung’s Carbon Disclosure Award at the ESGBusiness Awards 2024 reflects its broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Globally, Samsung has been recognised for its efforts in lowering the carbon footprint of its production cycle, including innovations in memory chips that have helped cut emissions by 700,000 tons. In Malaysia, Samsung is expanding these efforts by incorporating recycled materials into a growing range of products, including smartphones, home appliances, and consumer electronics.
Samsung’s environmental leadership extends beyond product development and packaging. The company’s Eco-Conscious Repair Program provides customers with affordable, sustainable repair options that significantly reduce e-waste. This targeted approach not only saves customers money but also reduces the overall environmental impact of repairs. Between 2022 and 2024, Samsung’s repair programmes saved an estimated 140,571 trees by reducing e-waste generation, with over 48,000 successful repair cases across mobile devices and televisions.
These accolades underline Samsung’s innovative and responsible practices in both waste management and carbon reduction. By combining customer engagement with cutting-edge technology and sustainable design, Samsung is driving meaningful change toward a greener future. Its focus on everyday sustainability positions the company as a leader in environmentally conscious business practices, contributing to a more sustainable planet whilst maintaining its reputation for technological innovation.
