Rackspace Technology establishes sustainable IT framework, initiatives
It has taken a step towards promoting sustainability in IT to other players in the industry.
Technology is a significant driver of the consumption of energy and natural resources.
This is a value that cloud computing company Rackspace Technology has adopted and is promoting within the IT industry. Since 2021, the company has been driving a far more complex and holistic view of the environmental, economic, and equitable sustainability measures.
For the company, building sustainable IT solutions involves a business and domain-driven architecture framework that uses over 15 decision criteria to guide clients toward a sustainable multi-cloud architecture. This includes the use of green and renewable energy sources, smarter energy efficient IT infrastructure, and an optimised resources utilisation.
With data centre energy consumption expected to increase from 8% - 20% by 2030, there is a need to move towards reduced wastage with an event-driven, serverless consumed on-demand. As such, Rackspace Technology is encouraging its customers to embrace multi-cloud, green and renewable energy sources, energy efficient data centres, smarter and more energy-efficient IT infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Rackspace Technology believes that investing in retraining existing staff can be a more economically sustainable approach. This has led the company to develop a technical professional training programme, which trains data centre engineers on more relevant cloud technologies or SaaS models required for building next-generation applications.
It has also drastically reduced its office space to 80,000 square feet and CO2 emissions to 1,485 tons per year. It has also donated over 1,500 monitors, 2,000 chairs, and hundreds of desks to schools, hospitals, military families, and those in need.
Through the establishment of a sustainable IT initiative, Rackspace Technology possesses the capability to exert influence, not solely within the organisation, but also to effectively respond to the pressing environmental changes and challenges confronted by our global clientele.
“By strategically implementing specific adjustments, we can facilitate our clients in swiftly adopting a company-wide approach that is both responsible and proactive in the utilisation of cloud technologies, thereby enhancing the efficiency of their waste management and sustainability practices," the company said.
