PT OKI receives the Renewable Energy Adoption Award

The company’s utilisation of biomass as fuel continues to decrease its environmental impact.

Winning the Renewable Energy Adoption Award at the ESG Business Award 2023 is a significant achievement that underscores the company's dedication to sustainability and innovation. Their use of advanced technology to leverage biomass as a green energy source sets a noteworthy example for others to emulate. This recognition not only emphasises the importance of adopting renewable energy sources but also highlights how companies can make a positive impact on the environment whilst maintaining efficiency and fostering innovation. It's a commendable milestone that showcases the company's commitment to a greener and more sustainable future

PT OKI Pulp & Paper Mills's (PT OKI) energy infrastructure is a notable example of a diversified and environmentally conscious approach to energy production. The three distinct energy plants play vital roles in the company's operations: power boiler plant, recovery boiler plant, and bark gasifier plant. By using these diverse biomass sources, including wood bark, heavy black liquor, and bark gas, PT OKI demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency. This not only contributes to their environmental responsibility but also showcases a model for other industrial operations looking to reduce their environmental footprint and maximise the use of renewable resources.

The significant reduction in carbon emissions from PT OKI's plants, driven by their use of renewable energy sources, is a noteworthy achievement. Their commitment to potentially achieving zero emissions in the future by transitioning to 100% renewable energy aligns well with global sustainability goals

Power boiler plant

PT OKI's sustainable practice involves using 98% biomass fuel in their power boiler contained in biomass wood bark, a by-product of the wood debarking process. This approach significantly reduces the reliance on fossil fuels and coal. Between 2021 and 2023 the company was able to reduce its coal consumption by 70% and diesel-oil consumption by 83%, which was previously used as backup fuel for emergency cases and start-up. These reductions were made possible by operational and maintenance improvements, resulting in fewer emergency cases and smoother start-up cases. PT OKI’s optimisation of bark wood utilisation and enhanced operation maintenance has led to an annual carbon avoidance of more than 2,4 Million tCO2e, which is a remarkable accomplishment. PT OKI's strategy for ensuring a steady supply of biomass products involves continuously exploring potential biomass resources in the surrounding area. Their resourceful use of Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) and palm fibre from a nearby palm oil plantation not only demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability but also offers several advantages such as resource efficiency, local collaboration, reduced environmental impact, and diversified biomass sources.

Recovery boiler plant

PT OKI uses Heavy Black Liquor (HBL) as biomass fuel for the recovery boiler, covering 85% of the total energy consumption in the mill, underscoring the crucial role this practice plays in their operations. This not only promotes resource efficiency and environmental responsibility but also ensures efficient and continuous production processes

The use of HBL in the Recovery Boiler has allowed PT OKI to achieve an outstanding zero-carbon emissions impact on the environment. This results in a carbon avoidance of more than 4 Million tCO2e per year, compared to the hypothetical scenario of using coal as fuel, which underscores the substantial environmental benefits of this practice.

Bark Gasifier

PT OKI's use of a bark gasifier in the pulp and paper industry is a noteworthy achievement. By employing this innovative technology, they have taken the lead in their field to utilise wood bark as a renewable energy resource for the gasification process. The bark gasifier process, which converts wood bark into a substitute for fossil fuels in the lime kiln process, showcases their commitment to sustainability and reducing their environmental impact. It can cover 80% of the total energy consumed in the lime kiln process.
The reduction in carbon intensity is 0.007 tCO2e per ton of total products in PT OKI. This substantial improvement reflects their commitment to sustainability and carbon emission avoidance with more than 200,000 tCO2e in 2023. This shows the positive impact of PT OKI's sustainable energy practices, which contribute to mitigating climate change and promoting a more eco-friendly operation. PT OKI's achievement in achieving nearly 98% renewable energy usage through various initiatives is truly commendable. Their unwavering dedication to renewable energy adoption and sustainable practices sets a remarkable standard for other industries to follow. It demonstrates the positive and substantial impact of utilising biomass fuel as an efficient and eco-friendly energy source.
