PLN brings home two wins at ESGBusiness Awards 2024
It is fully committed to realise the Sustainable Development Goals through its various programmes.
State electricity corporation PLN was honoured at the prestigious ESGBusiness Awards 2024 for its successful implementation of various well-being programmes that encompasses mental, physical, social, and financial health, as well as its fossil fuel-based decarbonisation programme that exemplifies the company’s commitment in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Amongst the programmes that it has implemented in support of its employees are the corporate regulation to support hybrid work systems, engagement of employees in competitive and fun sports activities, community enhancement of skills and collaboration, as well as webinars to support skills outside of the company’s scope.
PLN has conducted its PLN Electric Run, which has improved employee and community well-being. The event, which was held in October 2023, has targeted 5,000 runners and has contributed to a reduction of 11,880 kg of CO2 emissions.
Additionally, PLN has converted the running distances and fuel savings achieved by the runners into funds to support the installation of new electrical connections for underprivileged communities.
The company has also conducted monitoring to assess the impact of employee well-being programmes through life satisfaction, engagement, and cultural entropy surveys. Based on the results, there has been an increase in the productivity ratio, Employee Engagement Index, work condition, and well-being index. This indicates that the PLN well-being programme during the 2022-2023 period has been effective.
Meanwhile, PLN highlights its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) scenarios as one of its strategies. Through the Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) Scenario, Indonesia is building equitable national electricity by maximising clean energy potential throughout the country. By 2040, 75% of additional generation will come from new renewable energy (NRE) and 25% will come from natural gas.
ARED will address the challenge of a mismatch between the location of large-scale renewable energy sources in remote areas and the electricity demand centre on the island of Java so that all renewable energy potentials across the country can be utilised.
Through ARED, Indonesia is building a national electricity distribution through the Green Enabling Super Grid along 49,200 km. The previously separated electricity system will become interconnected. Uniting Sumatra, Java - Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Maluku - Nusa Tenggara – Papua, even ready to realise the big dream by uniting the power system of the Southeast Asian region through the ASEAN Power Grid.
At the same time, it aims to decarbonise fossil fuel-based power plants through the cancellation of 13.3 GW new coal power plants, the replacement of 800 MW of coal with natural gas, and the implementation of carbon trading in 55 coal-fired power plants, amongst others. PLN aims for a 3.7 billion ton CO2 total cumulative emissions reduction/avoidance through this breakthrough programme.
This success has earned them Workplace Wellness Programme Award - Indonesia and the Net Zero Award - Energy category wins.
