Great Eastern Takaful takes home ESGBusiness Awards 2024 for its upcycling project
It has reached out to over 12,000 individuals, with over 50,000 training hours recorded.
Takaful provider Great Eastern Takaful Berhad (GETB) bagged the Initiative Award - Malaysia for Upcycling category win at the highly sought-after ESGBusiness Awards 2024 for its sustainability efforts in ensuring the management of recyclable plastics done through its GETB Upcycling Project.
It is a flagship environmental-based initiative that focusses on environmental awareness and the introduction of upcycling activity as a proactive measure in dealing with the concerning plastic pollution issues. Through the project, GETB has conducted various on-ground awareness programmes with schools and universities, corporate entities, and the local communities.
GETB Upcycling Project is part of GETB’s corporate social responsibility efforts, guided by three key pillars: GET-Green, GET-Care, and GET-Pintar.
Specifically under the GET-Green initiative, the company has expanded the project with continuous environmental care and awareness programmes. The initiative aims to cultivate upcycling practices across all employees whilst introducing the upcycling activities to the community, and mass public via various awareness programmes. It has observed various meaningful collaborations with various industry players and stakeholders.
The company has educated a total of 315 employees on the importance of environmental care, how the machine is being operated and its ability to produce upcycled products from used plastics for the benefit of the local community. To date, GETB has reached out to over 12,000 individuals with 53,000 training hours recorded and has produced 3,335 upcycled items. 900kg of plastic waste had also been gathered for this project.
Looking ahead, the company is set to continue spreading awareness and sustainability practices by enhancing its reachability and actively promoting upcycling activities to the community and mass public whilst providing training to them.
“GETB has always put a laser sharp focus in balancing out between business and contribution towards environmental sustainability. 2024 observes another promising year for GETB in terms of carrying out its ESG agenda and it is hoped that besides implementing various awareness programmes, GETB may chart its sustainability journey beyond Takaful business,” it said.
